The Regional Cultures of Japan course is a project based learning (PBL) course offered to all International Liberal Arts students interested in learning about regions of Japan and the cultures of those specific areas.

In this course, students develop subjective and collaborative team building skills while working in collaboration with designated organizations outside the university, repeatedly employing a variety of approaches such as grasping the needs of the organization, gathering information, analyzing information, planning and presenting proposals, and ultimately, making a presentation on how to solve a particular problem.

In addition, after learning the basics of fieldwork, students cooperate with designated organizations, grasp their needs and collect information, and by conducting information analysis and planning from various perspectives with each other, formulate a plan and make a presentation that introduces it. Collaborating with first-year students from the Department of International Liberal Arts at Chugoku Gakuen University, 5-students and two faculty members of the International Liberal Arts Department at MIU visited Okayama prefecture on December 8-9. The purpose of this visit was to learn about Okayama’s successes in promoting its culture through tourism. Most of the MIU participants are enrolled in the SDGs in Tourism course, so it was a great opportunity to put course knowledge into practice. Our students hope to share their experience with others through their presentations and research reports in the near future. Thanks to the cooperation of Chugoku Gakuen University, and especially Dr. Paul Moritoshi of CGU for his organization of events, we were able to develop new friendships and gain knowledge of successful ways to promote local culture through tourism by visiting places such as Okayama Castle, Kourakuen, and Bikan district.

In January, we are continuing the Regional Cultures of Japan course locally in the Kiyotake area where students will learn about new and innovative projects in Miyazaki.
