Challenging the Conventions of Learner Development Research
During the COVID pandemic, the conditions of teaching and learning underwent many changes. In particular, the experience of online classes presented many challenges for learner autonomy and the self-development of teachers and learners. In 2021, Head came together with other researchers in the JALT Learner Development SIG to work as editors of issue 7 of The Learner Development journal, themed on challenging the conventions of learner development research. The research groups focused on learner emotions, learner autonomy in the classroom and teachers’ life experience. The journal, coming out in December 2023, reflects diverse interpretations of challenging the conventions of research done by classroom teachers.
